TRAVIS GOOD, TROMBONE 2013-2015

 

Travis Good is a sophomore at Michigan State University from Grand Rapids, Michigan. At MSU, Travis is a member of the Michigan State University Symphony Orchestra.

Travis began the first 2 years of his trombone studies in the 5thgrade with Josh Whitman and spent the next 6 years studying with David Wells. Other influential teachers include Paul Keen, Jim Mollema, Matt George, Dave Klein, Tim Riordan, Marvin “Chappy” Perry, his brother Aaron, his sister Jen, his mother Deb, and his father Gregg.

 

In high school, Travis was the lead jazz trombone in both the Michigan Music Conference All-State Jazz Band for three consecutive years and the Michigan Youth Arts Festival (MYAF) All-State Jazz Band for two years. He also played in the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony for 4 years under the direction of John Varineau. In his senior year, Travis won the Grand Rapids Symphonic Band Youth Soloist Competition and received scholarships to the Berklee College of Music, Eastman School of Music, Western Michigan University, and Michigan State University.

 

In the community, Travis has performed with the Jubal Brass and appears on their first CD. On their second CD, to be released soon, director Chris Hansen arranged a feature solo for Travis. Travis has also performed with the Holland Symphony, Hark Up Horns, Grand Rapids Jazz Quartet, Grand Rapids Jazz Orchestra, and River City Jazz Ensemble. Other music awards include Outstanding Soloist at the CMU Jazz Festival, the MSU Jazz Festival, and the WMU Jazz Festival. Travis is pursuing a degree in trombone performance and is studying under Professor Ava Ordman at MSU. In his spare time, Travis enjoys fishing with his grandpa James VanStensel, Sr.
